Vote By Mail

Yesterday, I received my mail-in ballot, made my vote, and mailed it to my county’s board of elections. It’s an alternative, in this pandemic crisis, of electing our public officials.  It’s especially crucial to vote during this pandemic, so that we can have leaders who will truly  lead, truly work to help us resolve this crisis, and not soak the public of tax money to line their own pockets (like SOME people lurking around the White House!).

For information about voting in PHiladelhia, you can contact the City Commissioners’ website, https://www.philadelphiavotes.com/.  For the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (“Commonwealth,” meaning the common well-being of the community), go to https://www.votespa.com/Pages/default.aspx.  Let us come together to vote, so that we have officials worthy of us as a people. We deserve it.

E-Notary Services

As of this month, I have signed on as an Electronic Notary for Pennsylvania. I can now remotely notarize your deeds, wills, mortgages, and other documents. That’s important is this era of social distancing-may is, please Lord, come soon to an end. Please cal me for your notary needs.

Voting, June 2, 2020

June 2, 2020 is the new date for voting in the primary election in Pennsylvania. It is SUPER important all qualified voters to get out and VOTE, so that we can remove those incompetent fools and thieves who have brought us to this disaster, and we can elect those people who are dedicated to the public well-being (they’re out there).

You can apply for a mail-in ballot or absentee ballot from the state; for information, please go to the website votespa.com for details.

May 18 is the last day to update your voter registration; May 26 is the last day to apply for a mail-in ballot; and again, June 2 is the primary election in Pennsylvania. Please get out and VOTE, for your family, your community, and your country.

Philly For Change, March 4, 2020

I will attend the monthly meeting of Philly For Change, the progressive activist group, tonight at 7:00 PM, at Tattooed Mom, 5th and South streets in Philadelphia.

Present will be:

PA State Representative Malcolm Kenyatta;

Nikil Saval, candidate for PA First Senatorial District;

City Commissioner Lisa Deeley;

Greg Benjamin, candidate for the PA House, 188th District; and

Nikki Bagby, candidate for PA House, 198th District.

There will be discussion of the issues and questions for the candidates, in a relaxed atmosphere. I urge you to participate in the political process, as it affects our everyday lives; and, on Primary Election Day-April 28 in Pennsylvania- I URGE you to vote, to show the people in office that we intend to take back our democracy.

Election Time 2018

As a committeeman for my ward in South Philadelphia, and as an American, I urge you to get out there and VOTE in the general election. The last day for voter registration is October 9; the last day to apply for a civilian absentee ballot if October 30; and the election itself is on November 6. Here are the candidates I endorse:

US Senate from Pennsylvania, Bob Casey; and

Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Wolfe.

Not only must we get out and vote, but we must do so in record numbers, to show the politicians of both parties that we the people are conscious of what is going on in our nation and in our communities, and we want to hold them accountable and not take us for granted.

Later on the Presidential elections will come up; and hopefully the Democratic party leadership will have learned not to cheat the progressive element of their voice or votes, that the progressives of the party are raising serious issues:

trade treaties that move manufacturing, and the jobs that go with them, out of local communities and cause unemployment for workers, with its accompanying sense of hopelessness;

gun violence that kills young lives;

banks receiving virtual welfare-such as grants from the Federal Reserve-while delivering perks to executives and buyout deals for incompetent CEOs;

tax benefits for corporations and the wealthy which, in spite of the myth, do NOT simulate the economy, but stay in the foreign bank accounts of billionaires;

and the racism crawling out of the woodwork, thanks to (sarcasm alert) the wonderful example set by our commander-in-chief.  This list just scratches the surface.

Not only must you vote, but inform yourself of what goes on in the community an the world, so the politicians see you are paying attention to what is going on.

Upcoming, June 16, 2018

I will join members of my congregation, Leyv Ha-Ir (http://leyvhair.org), in a 100% School Funding Day of Action in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, sponsored by Philadelphian Organized to Worship, Empower, and Rebuild (POWER, https://powerinterfaith.org), here we’ll hold a rally in the State capitol Rotunda for equitable funding for schools in the state, through a “fair funding formula.” We ‘ll also march to Governor Tom Wolf’s office to pray for his support for such a funding plan. Our schools need funding for textbooks, building maintenance, teachers and other staff, libraries, computers-I could go on. Education is not a luxury, it is the great equalizer, the great source of personal and social empowerment.

The Philadelphia Unemployment Project (PUP, https://www.philaup.org), will hold its Jazz Fest at the first Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut Street, on Friday, June 22. They will honor my friend Jim Moran, veteran Labor activist and Executive Director Emeritus of the Philadelphia Area Project for Occupational Safety and Health (PHILAPOSH, https://philaposh.org), and Wilson Chang, senior IT consultant at the University of Pennsylvania, who has provided IT services for PUP at no charge. (No small service, with the internet being such a part of our lives.) Music will be provided by the Weez The Peeples Collective, led by percussionist Karen Smith. Please contact PUP for tickets to this event. This is a great organization, honoring two great activists.

Philly for Change

One of the groups I have long been active with is Philly for Change, the Philadelphia branch of Democracy for America, which was founded after the Howard Dean campaign of 2004.

They meet every first Wednesday of the month at the bar-nightclub Tattooed Mom, 5th and South streets in Philadelphia. Tonight, the guests will be Brian Sims, State Representative, who will discuss the state budget issue; Naiymah Sanchez, transgender advocacy coordinator for the ACLU on trans rights; Kate Goodman, of Fight for 15, on the minimum wage issue; and Melissa Robbins of NOW on pay equity.

Philly For Change, July 1, 2015

Among the various activist groups I’ve worked with over the years is Philly For Change, which is the Philadelphia affiliate of Democracy for America, which spun out of the presidential campaign of Howard Dean in 2004. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month, at Tattooed Mom,  5th and South streets in Philadelphia. Here, in a fun relaxed  setting, we discuss important issues such as government accountability and school funding, as well as listen to political candidates give their platforms and we vote on which candidates to endorse and work for. The group’s web site is philly4change.com.

The videos below, found in my YouTube channel, show the previous meeting of Philly For change. The first video is of my friend, Tracey Gordon, running for the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives.

Get Out There and VOTE!

Tomorrow, November 4, I will participate in the ultimate act of democracy, going to the polls and voting for candidantes I believe are best suited to run my state (Pennsylvania) and my nation. I will go and vote, and decide for my OWN self, and not have the commercial “news” media, owned by trillion-dollar corporations ownd by plutocrats, tell me not to bother, since “the polls” say our side is going to lose. Well, our side will lose only if we DON’T get out and vote, and not let some articifically concocted “opinion” tell us not to bother.
