There are so many “Christian” pastors and evangelists who have regarded Donald trump as their savior, despite his lying, philandering, and verbal abuse of certain groups.
One person sounding the alarm has been Russell Moore, formerly a top official of the Southern Baptist Convention. Moore has been ostracized from the SBC, due to his criticism of Trump and its tolerance of white Christian Nationalism. Moore also spoke of church pastors quoting from the Sermon On The Mount, and its phrase “turn the other cheek.” Parishioners would tell the pastor, “Where do you get those liberal talking points?”, and the pastor would say they were quoting Jesus himself; the response would be, “Yes, but that doesn’t work anymore, that’s weak.” (https://www.npr.org/2023/08/08/1192663920/southern-baptist-convention-donald-trump-christianity)
But so many other prominent evangelicals have called Trump the savior of America, as shown in the photo of pastors and evangelists laying hands on Trump in the Oval Office. The long-term goal for them is to turn the United States into a theocracy. (I remember, during the Obama administration, so many Republican politicians howled about the dangers of Islamic Sharia Law, like it would be imposed upon cities and counties. But they have to trouble with their OWN version of religious law being imposed upon the nation; a combination of racism and religious bigotry, and I use that word deliberately.)
The Evangelical movement has been affected by the movement, New Apostolic Reformation (NAR), a movement stating that prophecy continued after Jesus, and the movement’s leaders are today’s prophets. (If they’re considered prophets, they can tell their followers that God has brought them a new revelation, “updating” Christianity to serve their purpose.)
The doctrine behand the movement is Dominionism, the idea that Christians have to have control of every facet of society, such as media, business, education, government, which they call the “Seven Mountains Mandate.” (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/meet-the-powerful-evangelicals-who-believe-trump-is-an-apostle-who-will-reclaim-america-for-christ/ar-AA1oJ5yb)
This is a society dominated by “Christians,” as THEY define them. Other religious traditions, like Judaism and Islam, would be liable for discrimination.
Having grown up in a small Methodist church in a rural area, where there are few places to gather and limited knowledge of the world beyond the town limits, I know you just don’t leave your other beliefs and ideas at the church door on Sunday morning; you can interpret the Gospels through the mental lens of your ideas and prejudices. And they call themselves “Christians” since the church is their gathering place and extended family.
There are indeed thousands of religious traditions, due to people’s understanding of God and God’s creation. A theocracy, as proposed by the NAR movement, would promote ONE particular idea of “Christianity,” and exclude others; and people in other religions would face discrimination or imprisonment. And the fact that their new messiah is a twice-impeached, tax-cheating, wife-cheating, golf-cheating, racist and rapist thug who sold out our country to Putin shows how, while preaching morality, shows how amoral and corrupt this movement is. Let us learn about differing religions, and fight for people’s right to practice them.
