It’s happened-the Supreme court is deciding to put an end to Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 decision that prohibited states from passing laws preventing women from attaining abortions. (https://www.politico.com/news/2022/05/02/supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-00029473) Justice Samuel Alito produced a draft decision that declared that Roe “was egregiously wrong from the start,” and “an abuse of judicial authority,” adding, “The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision”.
The idea is, supposedly, to return the question of abortion to “the people’s elected representatives,” meaning the state legislatures, such as in Texas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma, that have pass the most draconian and restrictive laws preventing women from having an abortion-like the Texas snitch law, where, if you report someone having an abortion after a certain number of weeks, you can receive a bounty of $10,000.00.
And, of course, the anti-abortion conservatives believe that would be the end of abortions. Not at all! Abortions will continue, but in back alleys and basements, in the most dangerous conditions; or else women would have to do it themselves, which bleach and coat hangers.
NO, the issue is NOT settled. We won’t take it. It’s the right of a woman to control her body and her life. To me, the anti-abortion crusade is a passive-aggressive assault on women daring to run their lives and seek equality; it has nothing to do with saving the baby-they could care less about what happens to the child after birth. I’m a man, therefore I can’t get pregnant, and so I wholeheartedly support abortion and reproductive rights. I urge you to do the same, by getting out there and voting, to elect pro-reproductive rights candidates to office.
