There WAS a time, alas, when the Democratic party was the party of re-establishing white dominance over African-Americans, and the Republican party was the party of Lincoln and of post-Civil-War reconstruction; the roles have reversed. Wilson was progressive in SO many ways, and a visionary in terms of the League of nations (which was replaced by the United nations) as a vehicle for peacefully resolving disputes between nation-states. Plus, during the First World war, it was under the “liberal” “progressive” Wilson that the radical movements of the day, like the Socialist party and the IWW, were violently suppressed for opposing the war-not at all “liberal” or “progressive.”
