JLC Labor Seder

I joined other members of the Philadelphia Labor community in the Labor Seder, held by the Philadelphia chapter of the Jewish Labor Committee. (JLC)

The JLC was founded in the 1930s by Jewish trade unionists, to help combat the rise of Fascism in the US and abroad. Since then, it has remained the link between the Jewish Community and the Labor Movement, sharing concerns about justice in the workplace and in society in general.

The Seder recounted the struggles of the Israelites fleeing slavery in Egypt, along with contemporary Labor and Civil Rights struggles, such as the Triangle Shritwaist Factory Fire of 1911, and the organizing of farm workers in the 19602 and ’70s. When we got to the ritual of the Ten Plagues, where we take a drop of wine out of the cup for each of the plagues that fell on Egypt, we took drops out for such contemporary plagues as war, racism, sexism, homophobla, etc.
