Grassroots Arts

One organization I’m active with is PhillyCAM, the public access channel in Philadelphia (https://phillycam.org/). Here, neighborhood people can report on the news in their communities, and musicians and other artists can showcase their performances; they also have WPPM on the FM dial, with English and Spanish programming, alternative news, and music from local artists (https://wppm.phillycam.org/). They’re all about letting unrepresented groups have a voice with visual media. They’re located at 699 Ranstead Street in Philadelphia.

I have also been long-involved in the poetry readings by the Moonstone Arts Center (https://moonstoneartscenter.org/). They hold readings in the second floor of Fergie’s Pub, 1214 Sansom Street in Philadelphia (https://www.fergies.com/), and there are two or three featured readers, followed by an open-mic for local poets to briefly read their material.

There is also my FAVE bar, Dirty Frank’s, 347 South 13th Street in Philadelphia, which holds their Off The Wall arts show, with local painters showcasing their works for sale, and holding a reception for each month’s new show.

THIS is how the arts-music, written, and visual-begin, like politics, among working and low-income people finding media to express their lives and their issues.  Let’s give all encouragement to the arts and the artists-maybe YOU can be one?
