Juneteenth a National Holiday

via Juneteenth and the memorial to black history in Texas

I am  now one of those who believe that Juneteenth- the holiday celebrated in the African -American community, when in 1865 the former slaves heard of the downfall of the Confederate regime and of the slave system that has been a shame to this country-should be celebrated as an official national holiday. To me, that would be a great alternative to the statues of the Confederate leaders, which were erected during the Jim Crow era-a time when the losers wrote the history of the Civil War.

  1. Thank you for your support of our Campaign to Establish Juneteenth as a National Day of Observance in America!

45 states now recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday or special day of Observance.

We have legislation unanimously passed by the U.S. Senate for over four years recognizing the “19th of June” as Juneteenth Independence Day in America.

Now we are working on the passage of SJR 45, introduced by former U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson of Texas in 2012, in 2018, making Juneteenth a National Day of Observance in America.
